Laura Niit: Blind trust in artificial intelligence is leading people into serious trouble

According to accountant Laura Niit, one of the current problems in the accounting sector is, among other things, the rise in unemployment. This is because many companies prefer outsourced services over permanent employees, as they are more cost-effective and flexible.

However, laid-off accountants often lack the opportunity to find new employment, as they have spent their entire careers handling the accounting of just one company. “When such a person enters the market and starts offering services independently, they lack experience across different economic sectors, fields of activity, and markets, including foreign markets. As a result, the quality of accounting services has noticeably declined over the past ten years,” she said.

In addition to rising unemployment, excessive reliance on artificial intelligence is also a problem. “An accountant must clearly understand the level of responsibility they bear toward their clients,” she added.

What will change in Finnish taxation in 2026?

The value-added tax (VAT) rate for goods and services subject to the reduced 14% rate will decrease to 13.5% from the beginning of 2026.
This tax rate covers, for example, foodstuffs, restaurant and catering services, medicines, passenger transport, and accommodation services.

Withholding income tax on salary: 22%
Tax-free income: 700 euros per month and 8,400 euros per year, regardless of the person’s total income
Tax-free income for people of retirement age: 776 euros per month and 9,312 euros per year
Monthly amount serving as the basis for the minimum social tax obligation: 886 euros, i.e., the minimum monthly social tax payment is 292.38 euros (886 × 33%)
Unemployment insurance premium: 1.6% for the employee and 0.8% for the employer
Funded pension (II pillar) contribution: 2%, 4%, or 6%
Corporate income tax rate: 22/78
Tax-free daily allowance for foreign business trips:
- 75 euros for the first 15 days of the trip, but for no more than 15 days per calendar month
- 40 euros for each additional day of the trip
Minimum daily allowance for foreign business trips: 40 euros per day
Tax-free limit for compensating the use of a personal car: 0.50 euros per business-related kilometer based on a mileage log, but not more than 550 euros per month per employer
Tax-free limit for representation expenses of legal persons: 50 euros per calendar month, plus 2% of the total personalized payments subject to social tax made during the same month

Self-Employed Persons (FIE) and Taxes (as of 1 January 2026):

Quarterly social tax obligation: 877.14 euros (886 × 3 × 33%)
Income tax rate: 22%
II pillar pension contribution for FIE participating in the funded pension scheme: 2%, 4%, or 6% based on taxable income
Unemployment insurance premium for FIE: Not required

Tax exemptions and tax rates starting from 01.01.2025

tax-free income up to 654 euros per month and up to 7848 euros per year.
tax-free income at retirement age remains 776 euros per month and 9312 euros per year
unemployment insurance contribution for the employee 1.6% and for the employer 0.8%
funded pension contribution 2%, 4% or 6%
social security contribution 33%, minimum obligation monthly rate 820 euros and social tax 270.60 euros.
tax-free limit for daily allowance for foreign missions:
75 euros for the first 15 days of foreign missions, but not more than 15 days per calendar month, and
40 euros for each subsequent day of foreign missions.
Tax-free limit for personal car profit compensation:
based on the calculation of business trips, 0.50 euros per kilometer of business trip, but not more than 550 euros per month for each employer paying the compensation.
As of 01.01.2025, the employer’s business-related expenses for employee accommodation will not be considered a special benefit if both conditions are met:
– the employee’s place of residence is at least 50 kilometers from the workplace and the employee does not own real estate used as housing closer to the workplace and these conditions are met throughout the entire period of accommodation;
– the expenses per employee being accommodated are up to 500 euros per calendar month in the case of accommodation in Tallinn or Tartu and up to 250 euros in other cases.
As of 01.01.2025, goods transferred for advertising purposes or services provided, the value of which excluding VAT is up to 21 euros, are not subject to income tax.
The tax-free limit for reception expenses for legal entities is 50 euros per calendar month, plus 2% of the amount of payments taxed with personalized social tax made in the same calendar month.

From 01.09.2024, the VAT rate in Finland will change

From September 1, the general VAT rate in Finland will increase from 24% to 25.5%.

The new percentage will be applied to goods and services currently subject to a 24%VAT rate.

From October 1, new requirements regarding construction objects

From 1 October 2023, larger constructions, subcontracting chains and employees allowed to constructions must be registered in the e-services environment of the Tax and Customs Board.

Soon, it will be obligatory to provide data on the time employees spend on constructions.
You can find more information on ordering employee cards https://helk.hansab.ee.

Electronic registration is mandatory on constructions that are subject to special requirements in relation to notifying the Labour Inspectorate and occupational safety:
• the duration of construction work exceeds 30 working days and at least 20 people are at work at a time, or
• the workload exceeds 500 man-days.

The registration obligation concerns constructions which are to be built after 1 October 2023 or which are under construction and the expected completion deadline is later than 1 October 2024.

The information system for registration of subcontracting chain and working time can be used in the e-services environment of the Tax and Customs Board from 1 October at the latest.

As of 1 October 2023, the subcontracting chain and the time construction workers spend on a construction site must be registered in the e-services environment of the Tax and Customs Board

The aim of the amendment is to ensure fair competition in the construction market. Only the people who are recruited according to established requirements, who receive declared wages and of whom both the main contractor and state have a clear overview are allowed to work on a construction site.

This new procedure is provided by the “Act that amends the Taxation Act and the Income Tax Act” (“Maksukorralduse seaduse muutmise ja tulumaksuseaduse muutmise seadus”: https://www.riigiteataja.ee/akt/105042022001).

Electronic registration is mandatory on construction sites that are subject to special requirements in relation to occupational safety and

notifying the Labour Inspectorate:

• the duration of construction exceeds 30 working days and at least 20 people are at work at a time; or

• the workload exceeds 500 man-days.

The registration obligation concerns those sites where construction starts after 1 October 2023 or where construction is ongoing and the expected completion deadline is later than 1 October 2024.

The information system for registering subcontracting chain and working time is being developed and training courses on how to use the system are also being planned. More information on the subject will follow in the future.
